Rumours of Gatsby spread like wildfire through New York City, reporters show up at his door hoping for interviews. Amid the chaos, Nick Carraway tells of Gatsby's true past. He was born James Gatz, a poor boy, and grew to hate the implications of poverty. Gatz was brought up by a wealthy copper tycoon, Dan Cody, and grew a respect and likeness for wealth and power, driving him to become James Gatsby. As his relationship with Daisy develops, they spend more and more time together. Gatsby throws a party in Daisy's honour, which she does not enjoy. Gatsby urges Daisy to leave Tom so she can be with him, at this, Nick reminds Gatsby he cannot change the past. Gatsby protests he can.
